Liquid Penetrant Testing Services
Nondestructive flaw detection for surface cracks and defects
What is liquid penetrant testing?
Liquid penetrant testing (PT) is a highly effective, noninvasive method that uses specialized liquids to detect surface defects, such as cracks, porosity, or other material inconsistencies that are open to the surface. This technique is ideal for inspecting parts made of nonporous materials (or materials that are supposed to be nonporous), such as metals or plastics, where the defect is visible at the surface level.
How Apex’s liquid penetrant testing works
- Cleaning: First, we thoroughly clean the part to remove any dirt, grease, or contaminants that might affect the testing.
- Penetrant application: Next, we apply a liquid penetrant (either red or fluorescent dye) to the part’s surface. This liquid flows into any cracks or defects that are open to the surface.
- Excess penetrant removal: After allowing the penetrant to seep into any defects, we carefully clean away the excess, leaving only the penetrant trapped in the flaws.
- Developer application: Finally, we apply a developer liquid to pull the penetrant out of the defects and spread it across the surface, making any flaws clearly visible — either to the naked eye or under a black light, if fluorescent dye was used.
